Enthusiasm in a Job Interview

One of the most exciting events when you are fully engaged in prospecting and hunting for that next job is when you actually get called in for an interview.

Yes, you're excited and nervous all at the same time; and yes you should go into the interview with your nerves and your excitement under control. But, not to the point where you appear to be dead pan and too calm, cool and collected.

You do want to bring with you a certain level of enthusiasm to the interview process. Any company wants their prospective hires to have a good energy level.

Many times the interviewers on the other side of the table may not be professional interviewers; but rather department heads or team leaders and the time they have to spend interviewing isn't the first thing that comes to their mind on things they want to do that day. So, do your part, and literally bring some energy to the table.

You should be constantly reminding yourself that you aren't the only person that they will interview for this position and as such the 'on paper' qualifications of all those interview may be quite similar.

So, if all else is relatively equal between you and the other applicants; what is going to set you apart... either in a positive or negative light?

Enthusiasm doesn't have to take the form of a cheerleader type of personality. You can be enthusiastic by maintaining a pleasant and yet professional countenance throughout the question and answer period.

The interviewers may have already sat with several other applicants or none at all. It really shouldn't matter to you. You can present a strong message to the interviewers not only with the answers you provide, but by maintaining a good energy level as well.

Your energy level will be contagious. If you leave the room and the people who have interviewed you have had their energy boosted as a result of talking with you, then trust me, you will be remembered.

When you answer the interview questions you should use good voice inflection with your answers and don't speak in a monotone or deadpan delivery... allow the excitement of this possible job opportunity come through for you.

You'd be amazed at how just by keeping a smile on your face will affect how you actually sound and come across to someone.

By doing this, you will indirectly be transmitting to the interviewers that you are someone that they would be quite comfortable with representing the company.

Having said all of this about being enthusiastic, there is a word of caution here. Don't go overboard to the point of coming across as phony or transmitting false enthusiasm. Remember... maintain professionalism.

Enthusiasm coupled with honesty and sincerity is really the key to being one who will stand out from the crowd. So, work on that smile as you answer questions and be excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for you.
